<span class="s1">The piece was created for Thomas Gould, violinist and leader of Britten Sinfonia, who was looking for a jazz composition to perform at Kings Place as part of his <i>Gould Standard Series</i>. Thomas has a love and fascination for jazz, and a growing fan base as a jazz violinist, alongside his reputation as a fine classical soloist. This gave me the musical freedom for the main melodic theme to begin on the violin and exhibit an element of reflective romanticism, and at the same time incorporate jazz patterns not generally found in classical music. I knew Thomas liked the percussive, rhythmic feel on a track on my album <i>The Long Way Home</i> called <i>Silverlink Express</i> and so that became my touchstone in the development of the composition.</span><br />

<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">During the period prior to and while writing <i>Mother Medusae</i>, stories about the #MeToo movement, the gender pay gap and aggressive online ‘trolling’ were unfolding in the news. However, women were finding solidarity, fighting back and confronting the situation. Mary Beard’s book <i>Women and Power</i> spoke of classical attitudes to women and how these attitudes have been perpetually recycled to this day. The symbolic meaning usually associated with the Medusa is that the Medusa monster, a Gorgon, is to be feared, however <i>Medusae</i> are also associated with protecting women from evil. This fierce feminine power as a protector from evil is at the heart of my composition, inspiring a fluidity and strength in the musical movement and requiring a bold attack in the performance.</span></div>

It’s been brilliant to work on the music for this as part of the <a href="https://www.air-edel.co.uk/representation/zero-vu/" target="_blank"><span style="color: magenta;">ZeroVU</span></a><span style="color: #b4a7d6;"> </span>team with my partners, Nick Taylor (bass player and recording engineer at Air Edel) and multi-instrumentalist, Mitch Taylor. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The film has been described as a post-Brexit love story and tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers who meet as migrants in London trying to make sense of their new world. It’s beautifully filmed in London and the Devon coast and features rising stars Lucie Bourdeu and Jonathan Ajayi. We took a very pared back approach with the music to help convey the fragility of their relationship which is at times quirky, funny and bittersweet with a dark edge running through it. The film should be playing festivals later this year and I’ll post more info here. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">John Reid</td></tr>

<div style="font-size: 12px;">
<br /></div>
I first started working with the incredibly talented singer-songwriter John Reid in the 90s just before he had a huge hit with <a class="" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_the_Feeling_On"><span class="">“</span><i class="">Push the Feeling On</i>”</a> <span class="">with his band the Nightcrawlers (if you’ve ever been to a club in the 90s, you’ll definitely remember raving to that song). The songs we were writing at the time were a bit more Soul/RnB and, as house music was the new big thing, these tunes ended up on the back burner for a while. Quite a long while as it turned out! </span><br />
<span class=""><br /></span></div>
<div class="x_MsoNormal" style="font-family: helvetica;">
</div>
<div class="" style="font-family: helvetica;">
After nearly 30 years, we dug deep into the soul vaults and found some of the old tunes we penned back in the 90s and added a whole raft of new songs in that old school vibe. We put out the digital release of John’s “<i class="">Nightcrawlers Soul Sessions</i>” earlier this year which came out to great feedback.<br />
<br />
Our singles “<i class="">All Night Long</i>” and “<i class="">Love Comes Around</i>” both hit the number one spot on the UK Soul Chart and got a lot of love from all the best soul stations including Mi-Soul, Delite, Solar and Starpoint Radio. BBC Radio also gave us great support from DJs Paul Miller, John Leech, and the legend that is Tony Blackburn. </div>
<div class="" style="font-family: helvetica;">
<br class="" /></div>
<div class="" style="font-family: helvetica;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FAhpaIyGPRw/W5uOfsoK4VI/AAAAAAAAAzw/B-A57jLS2AsAUcndoZ7KjD8Q9EIWYoaAgCLcBGAs/s1600/John%2BReid%2BCD%2Bcover.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="240" data-original-width="240" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FAhpaIyGPRw/W5uOfsoK4VI/AAAAAAAAAzw/B-A57jLS2AsAUcndoZ7KjD8Q9EIWYoaAgCLcBGAs/s320/John%2BReid%2BCD%2Bcover.jpeg" width="320" /></a>So I’m really delighted to share that anyone who wants to buy the “<i>Nightcrawlers Soul Sessions</i>” album in CD format, it’s available as of today at HMV, on Amazon and all good record stores.<br />
<br />
And if you want to have a listen on iTunes or Spotify, you can tune in <a href="http://smarturl.it/JohnReidNSS" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="font-family: helvetica;">
I had a brilliant time co-producing this with my compadre, Ernie McKone of Boogie Back records fame. Between us, we played pretty much all the instruments, apart from horns - and everything is live which gives the album a really special feel. John’s vocal performances are stunning and you can see why he’s had number one hits for everyone from Leona Lewis (“<i class="">A Moment Like This</i>”) to <span class="">Westlife (“</span><i class="">Unbreakable</i><span class="">”) and Tina Turner (“<i class="">When the Heartache is Over</i>”. </span><br />
<br />
I’m really proud of this project and loved that Robert Elm’s compared some of it to Michael Jackson’s “<i class="">Off The Wall</i>”. Hope you enjoy it. </div>

Ok, first I've got to apologise to the people who may actually bother to read my posts...although how can I blame you for not checking them out if I don't write anything...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EO-0l8eJy7c/WlNpNk8RuuI/AAAAAAAAAxg/Yw46AYLk0VYe0q-mM_njqWoqddcsYgJRwCLcBGAs/s1600/MikeMcEvoyNov2017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EO-0l8eJy7c/WlNpNk8RuuI/AAAAAAAAAxg/Yw46AYLk0VYe0q-mM_njqWoqddcsYgJRwCLcBGAs/s320/MikeMcEvoyNov2017.jpg" width="240" height="320" data-original-width="800" data-original-height="1066" /></a></div>Well, that's going to change. From now on I'm going to try and honour this space, using it as a place to share not only info about my work, but also thoughts about the books I'm into, films I've seen, and maybe even more personal opinions and perspectives about life and the world we live in (dare I speak my truth?).<br />
<br />
It's been a very strange, interesting time these past two years or so: with now Trump in the White House, and the instability of Brexit here in the UK, not to forget the allegations of sexual abuse in the entertainment industry and beyond. The sands are shifting beneath our feet. I must salute all the courageous, inspiring women who have shared their harrowing stories with the world, and because of their brave actions it feels like a period in history where the potential for real lasting changes in gender dynamics might be possible. Oprah Winfrey's speech at the 75th Golden Globe Awards, after receiving the <a href="https://www.goldenglobes.com/cecil-b-demille-award-0">Cecil B. DeMille Award</a>, says it all. <br />
If you haven't heard it yet, check it out here: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN5HV79_8B8">"A New Day is on the Horizon!"</a><br />
<br />
But for todays Post, as it's the first in long while, I'm going to focus on catching up with my recent creative activities. <br />
<br />
It's been a really productive and creatively interesting time!<br />
I scored the mini TV series <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Angel_(2016_TV_series)">DARK ANGEL</a> for World Productions/ITV early in 2016 (produced by Kirstie MacDonald, directed by Brian Percival).<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3eOQQLtc8YM/WlNl8KRI1FI/AAAAAAAAAxc/tmPdIMk8uOcbJGRD_duJ6cwYDZH3CNV1ACLcBGAs/s1600/Dark-Angel-001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3eOQQLtc8YM/WlNl8KRI1FI/AAAAAAAAAxc/tmPdIMk8uOcbJGRD_duJ6cwYDZH3CNV1ACLcBGAs/s320/Dark-Angel-001.jpg" width="320" height="180" data-original-width="1031" data-original-height="579" /></a></div>It starred <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joanne_Froggatt">Joanne Froggatt</a> in the leading role. She gave an incredible performance! Part 1 aired in the UK on Halloween night 2016, and part 2 a week later. It went out in the USA on <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/shows/dark-angel/">PBS/Masterpiece theatre</a> in May 2017. It's also now available on <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dark-Angel-True-Story-Cotton/dp/B01M1W6AVG">DVD and streaming.</a><br />
<br />
This past year (2017) I was given the opportunity to work with a wonderful director, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Loncraine">Richard Loncraine</a>, on a feature film written & produced by Nick Moorcroft and Meg Leonard called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finding_Your_Feet">'Finding Your Feet'</a>. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PfCor7yD4P8/WlNlyUzgYYI/AAAAAAAAAxY/JHChu7eeVVgZNQ_wHiRrmBoicY9_RdG8wCLcBGAs/s1600/Finding_Your_feet_-_eOne_official_U.K_Theatrical_poster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PfCor7yD4P8/WlNlyUzgYYI/AAAAAAAAAxY/JHChu7eeVVgZNQ_wHiRrmBoicY9_RdG8wCLcBGAs/s320/Finding_Your_feet_-_eOne_official_U.K_Theatrical_poster.jpg" width="320" height="239" data-original-width="365" data-original-height="273" /></a></div>It was a fantastic experience working with the creative team which included editor Johnny Daukes and Music Editor Graham Sutton. The film stars some of Britains finest actors and actresses including Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie, Timothy Spall and Joanna Lumley. It's released in cinemas across the UK in Spring 2018. <br />
Watch the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-Cp6ba2Y0g">Trailer here.</a><br />
<br />
<br />
Another fantastic project I had the privilege of scoring in 2017 was a feature length documentary called 'Jazz Ambassadors' which was directed by <a href="http://hugoberkeley.co.uk/">Hugo Berkeley</a>.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mJFDR3agEIo/WlNkSXDT-tI/AAAAAAAAAxU/t6JoSOQwV9cT3aEVSNiB5g00WCN98yrYQCLcBGAs/s1600/JAs_LouisArmstrong%2BPHOTO_Soundcloud.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mJFDR3agEIo/WlNkSXDT-tI/AAAAAAAAAxU/t6JoSOQwV9cT3aEVSNiB5g00WCN98yrYQCLcBGAs/s320/JAs_LouisArmstrong%2BPHOTO_Soundcloud.jpg" width="319" height="320" data-original-width="501" data-original-height="502" /></a></div>The film shines a light on a difficult period in US history during the Cold War (not unlike the current period in some respects...) when the US State department sent American Jazz musicians overseas to 'spread the word' about freedom and the 'American way of Life'. It's a fascinating study on the power of music to break through cultural barriers and instigate change in the world. Check out this <a href="http://time.com/5056351/cold-war-jazz-ambassadors/">article in Time Magazine</a> about it.<br />
<br />
<br />
In addition to my work 'scoring to picture' I've also been writing and producing music for a couple of very cool bands and artist - but more on that next time!<br />
<br />

Making 'The Long Way Home' has been quite a journey...It was just under a year ago when I launched my KickStarter project. At that point I had no idea if I would make my funding target. But due to the support and generosity of the 137 people from all over the world who backed my project, I was able to go into the studio as planned on May 15/16, 2013 to record the 8 tunes that I had ready.<br />
<br />
With an incredible band of musicians we recorded 4 tunes a day.<br />
<br />
Line up on Day 1 was:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t7sIVrKrZE8/Ux4cSkjs8TI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/b0KLAqo2dWs/s1600/Band_Day1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t7sIVrKrZE8/Ux4cSkjs8TI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/b0KLAqo2dWs/s1600/Band_Day1+copy.jpg" height="178" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
L. to R. - Calum Gourlay (bass) Gerard Precenser (trumpets), Nigel Hitchcock (alto sax), MJM (piano), and Dave Hamblett (drums). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On Day 2 the band was:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VKLrhEwVDNk/Ux4cUN6LnJI/AAAAAAAAAlY/q6eFoliQb1k/s1600/Band_Day2+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VKLrhEwVDNk/Ux4cUN6LnJI/AAAAAAAAAlY/q6eFoliQb1k/s1600/Band_Day2+copy.jpg" height="201" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
L. to R. - Ben Castle (tenor sax), Mark Nightingale (trombone), MJM (piano), James Maddren (drums), Tom Farmer (bass) and Gerard Precenser (trumpets).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I had a fantastic designer named <a href="http://www.gilplante.com/" target="_blank">Gil Plante</a> work on the Album artwork (CD and Vinyl) and the wonderful Cover Art photo is by my brother <a href="http://www.markmcevoy.co.uk/info.html" target="_blank">Mark McEvoy.</a> </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

Last year I spent over 6 months scoring an incredible documentary series for National Geographic USA called<i> </i><a href="http://youtu.be/yTEjIXv9RH8" target="_blank"><i>Alien Deep</i> (check a sneak preview on YouTube)</a>. I composed and recorded over 200 minutes of music across this 5 part landmark series. It's a fascinating exploration of the planets oceans directed by my good friend <a href="http://www.garyjohnstone.com/" target="_blank">Gary Johnstone</a>. It was a joy to work on this!<br />
<br />
I'm also now represented by a fantastic team of people for Film & TV at <a href="http://www.air-edel.co.uk/representation/composers/143/michael-j-mcevoy/" target="_blank">Air-Edel</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I'm in the process of putting my own band together to go out and play gigs and I'll soon be recording a new album of material. The album title is <i>The Long Way Home</i>. My brother <a href="http://www.markmcevoy.com/" target="_blank">Mark</a> is designing the cover art.<br />
<br />
I'm also working on a 2nd feature with Director <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcel_Grant" target="_blank">Marcel Grant</a> (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_Ines" target="_blank"><i>Just Ines</i></a>) called <i>Open Our Eyes</i>. We should begin scoring that in May.<br />
<br />
Lots of other bits and pieces in the pipeline - more on that later!<br />
Bring on Spring!Michael J McEvoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07871361303069866983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1594639215101600022.post-79985364010589704782012-02-28T11:30:00.000+00:002013-03-17T10:18:44.417+00:00'Forget me Not' Soundtrack album releasedJust a quick shout out to say the Soundtrack album for a film I scored last year is now available on iTunes. It's been a while since my last post - so here's a very quick catch up on what's been going on;<br />
Had some great gigs with 70s funk band <a href="http://www.pushband.com/" target="_blank">'Push'</a>.<br />
The album was released in November and I've co-written the title track 'Band on a Mission' and 'Long Gone' which has the wonderfully soulful vocals of Hamish Stuart of AWB fame.<br />
Here's a <a href="http://youtu.be/VLtj24m9B-g" target="_blank">video</a> put together by one of our fans...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ng8EeycN0zU/Tye4TbXDFfI/AAAAAAAAAZI/nQQXHg8qcaI/s1600/Push+&+Craig+Charles+@+BBC+Salford.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="195" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ng8EeycN0zU/Tye4TbXDFfI/AAAAAAAAAZI/nQQXHg8qcaI/s320/Push+&+Craig+Charles+@+BBC+Salford.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
We also did a live BBC Radio 6 broadcast on the Craig Charles Funk and Soul show which <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00m9jht">you can find it here</a> - just search for PUSH.<br />
Push is great fun! All the guys are old friends and bass player Ernie McKone is a long time collaborator who I continue to do a lot of writing and producing with - he's an incredibly talented musician.<br />
<br />
Besides that I'm scoring CBBC series Dani's House series 5. That will take me through to mid February, then it's straignt into an exciting National Geographic series about the Oceans with director Gary Jognstone. More on that later!Michael J McEvoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07871361303069866983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1594639215101600022.post-68782794139704013182011-09-10T08:58:00.000+01:002011-09-10T09:20:55.399+01:00Lots going on: 'Dani's House', 'Serve Cold' trailer and 'PUSH' albumWell September's come 'round again and it feels like the beginning of another year...<br />
<a href="http://www.danishouse.co.uk/">'Dani's House' series 4</a> (BBC/Zodiak) is completed and about to begin broadcasting and (I think) I'm about to start scoring series 5 at the end of the month...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QuJpNu7znJY/TmsZQQkgneI/AAAAAAAAAVw/IMofDlgSODA/s1600/Screen+shot+2011-09-10+at+08.59.35.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="196" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QuJpNu7znJY/TmsZQQkgneI/AAAAAAAAAVw/IMofDlgSODA/s320/Screen+shot+2011-09-10+at+08.59.35.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
One of the cool things I've done on the side recently is the music and sound FX for a trailer. It's for a feature film project in the pipeline called <a href="http://youtu.be/20lRcmBtndQ">'SERVE COLD'</a> written by <a href="http://www.lukebradford.com/">director Luke Bradford</a> - a very talented guy who I'm excited about working with! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FK0I7D759AI/TmsYAHp6cNI/AAAAAAAAAVk/PesQexAdJX0/s1600/Screen+shot+2011-09-10+at+08.54.54.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="173" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FK0I7D759AI/TmsYAHp6cNI/AAAAAAAAAVk/PesQexAdJX0/s320/Screen+shot+2011-09-10+at+08.54.54.png" width="320" /></a></div>
Here's a link to the <a href="http://youtu.be/20lRcmBtndQ">Trailer on YouTube:</a><br />
The other thing on the boil is a new album with my North London compadres, <a href="http://www.pushband.com/">PUSH</a>. I've co-written four songs on the album, including the lyric/melody to the album's title track 'Band On A Mission'. <a href="http://youtu.be/VLtj24m9B-g">Check out this video</a> - kindly put together by a fan of the band. This track features the amazingly talented vocalist/percussionist (and X-factor finalist!) <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Pearce"><span class="yellow_18">DANIEL PEARCE. </span></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0V-IxKZoTyk/TmsYYVruOjI/AAAAAAAAAVo/qHL-dVvpcRU/s1600/Screen+shot+2011-09-10+at+08.53.51.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="189" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0V-IxKZoTyk/TmsYYVruOjI/AAAAAAAAAVo/qHL-dVvpcRU/s320/Screen+shot+2011-09-10+at+08.53.51.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<span class="yellow_18">We'll be doing a bunch of gigs in November, including a couple of <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0072ky7">Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club nights</a> - so check out the <a href="http://www.pushband.com/gigs.html">PUSH website</a> for dates. If you like old skool funk (ala Tower of Power and James Brown) I promise you (or your money back!) you won't be disappointed!</span>Michael J McEvoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07871361303069866983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1594639215101600022.post-56255362482568865072011-08-21T23:40:00.000+01:002011-08-21T23:40:49.766+01:00Busy, busy, busy...Man! It's been an intense period! All good though - but feel bad I've not been able to update my blog. It's crazy these days trying to keep all the various broadcast devices up to the minute. Twitter, Facebook, my website... oh yeah, and I actually have to do some work from time to time.<br />
Well this is going to be a splurge-: <a href="http://www.danishouse.co.uk/">'Dani's House'</a> series 4 for Zodiak Media/BBC. I've working on that since end of March. 13 episodes almost done. Then starting series 5 end of September.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E7OEfT739bQ/TlGGSHKBfWI/AAAAAAAAAVU/ck4CfRAVhAw/s1600/P1010398.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="288" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E7OEfT739bQ/TlGGSHKBfWI/AAAAAAAAAVU/ck4CfRAVhAw/s320/P1010398.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I went to the Ivor Novello awards with my gorgeous wife Tracey. It was a lovely occasion (I was on the judging panel for computer games score). I had a nice surprise when I discovered my main man Steve Winwood was getting a lifetime achievement award for his wonderful song catologue. It was great to connect with him briefly. Ben Drew (Plan B) deservedly won lots of awards and seems to have a really good head on his shoulders. Very talented and insightful young man. I hope he can keep his feet on the ground as huge success can be a dangerous energy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/oRxEokeSjZ0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
Also, been working with PUSH (my old buddies from North London), the 70s style funk band I've worked with as a writer/arranger/keyboard player off and on for 15 years. We opened for George Clinton at Kentish Town Forum in June. Great crowd - great vibe. Check it out:<br />
<br />
Finally, a big moment for Mary Leay.<br />
SEG released her first EP called <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/making-my-move-ep/id447633778">'Making My Move'. It's available on iTunes</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Mixed by Nick Taylor at Air-Edel, recorded and co-produced by James Towler at Wincraft studios, and Produced and arranged by yours truely. I'm very proud of this!Michael J McEvoyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07871361303069866983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1594639215101600022.post-5780180610148901282011-02-27T09:49:00.004+00:002011-02-27T09:58:30.624+00:00Jamie's Dream School - series starts 2nd March 2011<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's been a busy start to the year - and I'm sorry to say I've been a bit lazy with my blogging duties, so here's a quick check in to briefly mention some of stuff that's been going on.<br />
<br />
Mary Leay has a hot new band of incredibly talented young guys. She's gigging around London now. Click <a href="http://www.maryleay.com/">HERE</a> for her website to find dates, links to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/maryleayoffical">YouTube clips</a> and her <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mary-Leay-Official/7182317817">FaceBook</a> group. Next date is this Weds 2nd at The Elgin, Ladbroke Grove - well worth a visit. <br />
<br />
Also, I did string orchestrations for composer Andy Gray for a new CinemaNX film coming out later this year, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1698010/">TT3D: Closer to the Edge</a>, which follows the Isle of Man's treacherous motorcycle race. Hair-raising stuff!<br />
<br />
I've also been working with my old friend, director Gary Johnstone and editor Rick Aplin, on preliminary cuts of an amazing National Geographic series called Oceanus, which won't be finished until the end of this year - so watch this space.<br />
<br />
Finally, I had the pleasure of assisting Jazzie B on a new Jamie Oliver series called <a href="http://channel4.com/programmes/jamies-dream-school">Jamie's Dream School</a> which starts airing on C4 from 2nd March. Let's hope Jamie can do for education what he did for food! <br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_eX8EXqb_DpY/TMvdu-F4i3I/AAAAAAAAAUQ/eNlX8ZtSKuo/s1600/Screen+shot+2010-10-30+at+09.25.19.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_eX8EXqb_DpY/TMvdu-F4i3I/AAAAAAAAAUQ/eNlX8ZtSKuo/s1600/Screen+shot+2010-10-30+at+09.25.19.png" /></a></div>
<br />
On Halloween 2010 <a href="http://www.summerintransylvania.co.uk/default.aspx">Summer in Transylvania</a> begins broadcasting on Nickelodeon TV. Episode 1 was shown everyday at 5:30pm during half-term break the week before.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_eX8EXqb_DpY/TMvcg4OLVPI/AAAAAAAAAUI/yHZIU50n8KY/s1600/Screen+shot+2010-10-30+at+09.29.01.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_eX8EXqb_DpY/TMvcg4OLVPI/AAAAAAAAAUI/yHZIU50n8KY/s320/Screen+shot+2010-10-30+at+09.29.01.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The 20 part series was a really fun project and I had a great time working closely with producer <a href="http://www.saraputt.co.uk/clients/profile/?id=615771&name=Candida+Julian-Jones/">Candida Julian-Jones</a>, who incidentally co-wrote the theme song with me. <br />
The Theme Song was mixed by <a href="http://www.air-edelstudios.com/our-team/60/nick-taylor/">Nick Taylor at Air-Edel studios</a>, with <a href="http://www.myspace.com/crispinthepump">Crispin 'the Pump' Taylor</a> on drums and yours truly on guitars, bass, backing vocals and keyboards.<br />
The music is made up of theme related stings, underscore, and background tracks that play during the many parties, clubs, live band performances and in the famous 'Stakeout' cafe.<br />
I involved two great vocalists on some of the background songs - <a href="http://www.myspace.com/dunx-rockinhoarse">Duncan Byiers</a> and <a href="http://www.maryleay.com/">Mary Leay</a>. Mary also co-wrote a few of the songs with me.<br />
<a href="http://mediakidvids.net/actor.php?ref=524">Sophie Stuckey</a> (who plays the part of Summer) did a fantastic job recording the lead vocal on the Theme Song, 'Summer ion Transylvania', and was a joy to work with in the studio. She's got a lovely voice and I think you'll be hearing much more from her in the future!<br />

Working with a fantastic drummer named Hugo Degenhardt and an ace engineer Nick Taylor, we had the wonderful privilege of recording in Studio 2 where The Beatles did most of their recording. Using vintage mics (Blumlein, Coles, C12, U47s) Nick got an awesome sound!</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's a little film of Hugo and I putting one of the backing tracks down:</span><br />

Mary's album is nearing completion and her <a href="http://www.maryleay.com/">website</a> is now online.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="208" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_eX8EXqb_DpY/S5wwpLmBuZI/AAAAAAAAAOI/FsFEaoi05KI/s320/image3s.jpg" width="320" /></div>There's also a very cool little <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJqXXOUBjR8">film</a> made by John Mills (Director on 'Live From Abbey Road' seies / C4) about Mary, made at Wincraft Studio where we've recorded all the material. The features the core team of James Towler (Engineer/Co-Producer), Miles Bould (Drums) and yours truly. We're working on tune that features Jane Fenton, a wondeful Cellist I've known for many years.<br />
Check it out!<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.willbirch.com/">Will Birch</a>, the author, did an incredible amount of detailed research - he even sought me out to get my perspective regarding the 2 year period Ian and I worked together on the album '<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4,000_Weeks'_Holiday">4,000 Weeks Holiday</a>'.<br />
<br />
The book launch party was at the Groucho club on the 27th Jan - and it was a entertaining trip down a rather misty memory lane. I met up with some people I hadn't seen for a very long.... so long actually, I'm not going to say! Mari Wilson, Jenny Cotton, Ed Speight, Chaz Jankel, Terry Davies, Andrew King, Tracey MacLeod...Baxter turned up very late too.<br />
It was a lovely reunion...all of us graduates of the 'Dury Experience'. Fond memories and stories were shared. A good night!<br />
Here's a picture of me and Will Birch at the party (photo by Terry Lott)<br />
